Rattlesnake Avoidance Training
A controlled, seasonal program designed to teach your dog to recognize the presence of a snake—and choose distance rather than investigation.

The purpose of this training is simple: teach your dog to recognize the presence of a snake and choose not to approach or investigate it.
Avoidance does not look exactly the same in every dog. One may leave immediately, another may take a wide path around the snake, while another may stop or position itself between the snake and its owner. The response may differ, but the objective remains the same—leave the snake alone and create distance.
Although rattlesnakes are the primary focus of the training, the intended response is avoidance of all snakes rather than an attempt to distinguish between venomous and nonvenomous species.
The Training Experience
Individual training.
Controlled encounters.
Each dog moves through an individual training experience lasting approximately 20–30 minutes. The setting allows the dog to encounter the scent and sight of snakes, along with the natural sound of a rattlesnake’s rattle.
Live rattlesnakes are managed by experienced handlers and remain secured beneath purpose-built protective enclosures throughout each training encounter.
Armor K9 provides the e-collar used during the session. The stimulation level is selected individually to produce a clear avoidance response when the dog attempts to approach or investigate a snake. When the dog chooses avoidance, no stimulation is applied.
Owners may handle their own dog if they are comfortable doing so. Otherwise, an Armor K9 trainer will handle the dog while the owner accompanies and observes the experience.
Ways to Participate
Individual Appointments and Seasonal Training Days.
Seasonal Training Days
Each dog receives an individual scheduled appointment and moves through the training experience separately. Participating dogs remain separated until their scheduled time.
Training is seasonal and weather-dependent. Availability may change when rain, mud, snow-like conditions, excessive heat, or other circumstances make the environment unsafe for the dogs, snakes, handlers, or owners.
Eligibility and Preparation
Before your appointment.
Rattlesnake Avoidance Training is available to dogs of all breeds and sizes beginning at six months of age. Prior obedience training is not required.
Dogs must arrive healthy, leashed, under control, and current on vaccinations, including rabies. Armor K9 provides the e-collar used during the session. Owners who have concerns about their dog’s health or ability to participate should consult their veterinarian before scheduling.
Dogs with a bite history, aggressive behavior, or dangerous behavior are not accepted. Other temperament or handling concerns are considered individually before an appointment is confirmed.
Results, Limitations, and Refresher Training
A clear response.
Honest expectations.
A successfully completed session is marked by the dog demonstrating a clear avoidance response. Because every dog responds differently, the form and strength of that response may vary. If a sufficiently clear response is not established during the initial session, the dog may be invited to return for additional training.
Rattlesnake Avoidance Training is intended to reduce risk, but no training can guarantee how a dog will respond during every future encounter. Continued awareness and responsible handling remain important.
Annual refresher training is recommended before or around rattlesnake season, weather permitting. Each refresher is adjusted according to the dog’s response during the initial encounter. Dogs that received their original avoidance training elsewhere are also welcome.

Host a Training Day
Bring Armor K9 to an appropriate location.
Businesses, organizations, and private groups may arrange a hosted Rattlesnake Avoidance Training day at an appropriate location. Each dog receives an individual scheduled appointment and moves through the training experience separately.
Hosted training days require a minimum of 15 participating dogs. Location suitability, pricing, scheduling, and other arrangements are determined individually with the host.
