Protection Development, otherwise known as our Squire Program, develops suitable owner-owned dogs toward becoming capable personal protection dogs while preparing their owners to direct that capability responsibly.
From Squire to Knight
Developing a Knight in Shining Armor.
Protection Development is otherwise known within Armor K9 as our Squire Program. Just as a squire develops toward knighthood, each suitable dog-and-handler team works toward the standard of an Armor K9 Knight in Shining Armor—a highly social family companion with advanced obedience and dependable protection capability.
That standard is the intended objective, not a guaranteed outcome. Genetics, temperament, and natural ability cannot be manufactured. Armor K9 develops what the dog genuinely possesses while maintaining the judgment to stop when continuing would not produce a safe, reliable result.

A personal protection dog must possess the natural ability to respond when genuinely needed. Just as importantly, that capability must remain governed by obedience, judgment, and the direction of the handler.
The handler gives direction. The dog is trained to follow it. Throughout Protection Development, owners learn to control their dogs both in and out of drive, while the dog learns that unusual behavior, raised voices, or a tense encounter do not alone constitute a physical threat.
Protection is the skill. Companionship is the purpose.
Training Alongside Our Arizona Protection Dog Club
Development Through Shared Experience.
Protection Development is a nine-month program with weekly sessions held primarily on Saturdays alongside our Arizona Protection Dog Club. Club training generally lasts approximately three hours. Your dog’s work will focus on what is appropriate for its stage of development, with an emphasis on quality rather than quantity.
This environment allows handlers to observe teams working at different stages, learn from their experiences, and build relationships while becoming part of the Armor K9 family. Developing dogs may also benefit from watching more experienced dogs work through challenges they are still learning to understand.
When appropriate, Armor K9 may supplement Saturday training with individual, in-home, or other off-site sessions. Regular Saturday attendance remains an essential part of the program.
The Owner’s Responsibility
Development Requires Commitment.
Protection Development is designed for the dog-and-handler team. Owners are expected to attend Saturday training consistently, handle their dogs responsibly, and maintain and enforce established obedience between sessions.
Protection exercises are conducted under Armor K9’s direction. Owners are not expected to practice protection work independently between sessions. Their responsibility is to preserve the obedience, structure, and control upon which dependable protection is built.
Armor K9 provides the specialized equipment used during training and may recommend appropriate equipment for supervised practice at home.
Eligibility and Professional Judgment
Acceptance Begins with an Honest Assessment.
Entry into Protection Development typically follows Cutting Edge or Board & Train with the Protection Assessment & Development add-on. A young dog trained elsewhere may also be considered following an Armor K9 assessment. Acceptance remains at Armor K9’s discretion.
In some circumstances, Armor K9 may accept a dog with identified limitations when the owner fully understands the concerns, maintains realistic expectations, and recognizes that continued development depends upon the dog’s progress and Armor K9’s professional judgment.
Protection capability cannot be manufactured when the necessary genetics, temperament, or natural ability are not present. Armor K9 reserves the right to discontinue protection development when continuing would not support the safety, reliability, or responsible development of the dog-and-handler team.
Continuing Through the Club
Development Continues Beyond Graduation.
Upon completing Protection Development, the dog-and-handler team becomes a member of the Arizona Protection Dog Club.
Club membership provides an opportunity to continue developing and refining the team’s obedience, protection capability, and handling skills through advanced challenges and scenario-based training alongside other Armor K9 clients. It also preserves the relationships, shared experience, and ongoing support established throughout the Squire Program.

Determine the Appropriate Path Forward.
For dogs completing Cutting Edge or Board & Train with Protection Assessment & Development, eligibility for Protection Development is typically discussed directly at graduation. Owners may begin at that time or resume the conversation later.
Dogs trained elsewhere must complete a paid Armor K9 assessment before they may be considered for acceptance.
Once eligibility and the training schedule are confirmed, a deposit is required to reserve your training dates. Acceptance remains subject to Armor K9’s professional judgment.
