Who Chewy Is Today

A candid view of his history and potential.

Chewy came to Armor K9 from Mexico as a green dog being developed as a police-dog candidate. We purchased him with the intention of continuing that development for an Arizona police department, but the department ultimately passed on him. This does not mean Chewy is incapable of police work—only that he was not what that particular department was seeking.

Armor K9 has since chosen to redirect Chewy toward personal-protection development. He is a strong candidate for that role and can often be seen continuing his training at the Arizona Protection Dog Club.

Chewy is civil in nature, meaning his interest in protection work is not dependent upon visible training equipment. He has demonstrated the ability to focus on the person rather than merely reacting to a sleeve or other equipment.

Chewy has fairly good obedience, although it would benefit from additional refinement. He has not been trained with an electronic collar and is not being presented as a finished personal protection dog. His continued development should be shaped around the needs and experience of the right owner.

A single-family, single-dog household would likely suit Chewy best. He regularly remains calm around other dogs in the kennel environment and has shown no dog aggression, although those interactions have occurred with kennel barriers between them. Because he has not yet engaged directly with other dogs, any introduction would need to be handled carefully and evaluated under knowledgeable guidance. He has also not been evaluated around children.

Chewy’s new owner would be immediately eligible to participate in the Arizona Protection Dog Club, allowing both Chewy and his handler to continue developing together under Armor K9’s guidance.

A Considered Placement

The relationship must be right for both.

Placement will depend upon a careful evaluation of Chewy, the prospective owner, the household, and the role he would be expected to fulfill.
